Interview with DeathAwaits

Hi! Tell me about your band and what kind of previous experience do you have as musicians?

Hi, I am Jordan of the band DeathAwaits. DeathAwaits was created during the year 2002. The band picks its influences among different metal genders such as Death, Thrash, Hardcore or Grind.
After 2 EPs : DARK BREATH in 2003, REBORN in 2007 and a split CD in 2009 (with the grindcore band BOUNTY HUNTER) ; 2011 was the year of their first album’s release, called OUT OF ADVERSITY.
The recording of the second album began during year 2013 at Convulsound studio in Lyon. The album is called “The Abominable” and was released on February the 28th of 2014.
With this album, the band has gone a step further signing with the french record label SEND THE WOOD.
DEATHAWAITS shared the stage all over the years with several international metal bands such as DESTRUCTION, ABORTED, NO RETURN, ETHS, DAGOBA, BENIGHTED, SEPULTURA, LOUDBLAST, NAPALM DEATH, THE BACK DAHLIA MURDER… Moreover, the single “I Am The Abominable” is featured on the original soundtrack of Marilou BERRY’s first movie called “Josйphine s’arrondit”; which made almost a million entries in french cinemas in 2016.
DeathAwaits releases its third album called SOLVE COAGULA in february of the year 2017. The album is mixed and produced at the french sutio VAMACARA in 2016.
A deal is signed with SLIPTRICK RECORDS in early 2017, to set up the release in partnership with APATHIA RECORDS. The band made a 12 gig tour (spring 2017) in Spain & France and 10 gig tour (fall 2017) in France. More gigs and Festivals are to come in 2018.

Why did you pick your band name? How did you form? Why did you decide to play the genre or genres you do?

I am only in the band since 2014, so honestly I cannot tell you how the name has been picked! We play the kind of music we like in the band. Flo our singer, is a huge fan of Hardcore, our drummer Fred is found of brutal death, and I personnaly like modern death metal like The Black Dalhia Murder or Chimaira. I think the band is a mix between all these genres!

What can you tell us about your latest record?

Our latest record has been released in April 2017 with the lable Sliptrick records. This album is a modern mix of our 2 previous albums. The music has become more technical but without forgetting efficiency. We are very proud of this one! It is the first time we toured that much to promote an album. We made a 20 gig tour in 6 months through France and Spain, wich is a lot for a band like us!

What the kind of album feedbacks are you waiting for?

We’ve already had a lot of reviews, and the less we can say is that it’s good! We are stocked with the response from the press and the fans, who seem to really dig this album!

Are you gonna to make some world tour in the future? Do you think this is available for everybody option to tour around the globe? What do you think band have to do to get such opportunity?

We are seriously considering to have more tours in the future, espacially in Europe, but the opportunities are rare and expensive! We really enjoy performing our songs on stage so this is truly a goal for us to tour Europe! Let’s hope the future can offer that!

Do you believe in heavy music scene without money?

Tough question! I think it is very hard for bands like us because everything is very expensive in todays industry. From the production to the release, there is a lot of money involved.
And touring is hard nowadays. There is a lot more bands available on the internet than few years before, wich means that it is difficult to shine among them.

What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

I personnaly do not give our music for free! But you can listen to all of our albums for free on web streaming platforms (itunes, deezer, spotify). I Think it is almost the same nowadays!
We also have a lot of content on Youtube, which is also free. I think we offer the fans avery thing they need from us. Then if they like our music, they can buy it to support the band.

Who are your musical influences? Have you ever think your band could be so famous as your favorites?

My personnal Influences are bands like The black dalhia murder, Trivium, chimaira and Lamb Of God. But as I evolve in my music tastes I used to listen to a lot of different music, from rap, hardcore, heavy metal , progressive metal to Death metal. Our goal is not to be famous! We only want to play our music live and keep releasing albums!

Do you have a formal music education? Do you think it’s a Kind of important thing?

I played piano in my childhood and I learned music theory for almost 11 years! I think it is actually hepling me right now to write my music, but I also have friends with no theoric knowledge.
And they are doing quite well!

How do you balance your music with other obligations – mate, children, job?

Three of us have children to take care about so it is obviously not easy to manage both things. Our guitar player is also a music technicians, so it is had sometimes to schedule things up!
But until now, we have been quite lucky, we all manage to figure out how to organise our schedules and our obligations!

How do you handle mistakes during a performance? Or you can assure there are no any mistakes during your gigs? Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?

I think all musicians are making mistakes during there shows, and it have to happen! That’s the purpose of a live performance. If you like it perfect listen to the CD! We are playing the best we can on stage, but mistakes happen, that’s part of the game. I would rather prefer an energic live performance than static musicians delivering perfectly all their parts.

What’s next? Thank you!

So we are planning a third tour for spring 2018, and then we will stop touring for almost a year to prepare our 4th album release! We plan it for september 2019. A few songs have already been written, and I can promise you that it’s gonna be heavy stuff!
Thanks for the interview!
Cheers \m/
