Interview with Alla Bulgakova / Bagira

Hi! Tell me about your band and what kind of previous experience do you have as musicians?

Hi! Bagira – groove metal band from Kazan, Tatarstan, Russian, formed in 2011 by myself, vocalist Alla Bulgakova, and guitarist Alexander Shadrov.
Me and Alexander started to play in bands together still in high school but there was noname projects with local shows. At first we played old-school heavy metal like famous Russian band ‘Aria’ or British ‘Iron Maiden’, but with melodic female vocal.
The second guitarist Gleb Vodennikov has been in various cover bands before Bagira.
Bagira’s bassist Rival Zakirov was a member of local Kazan band ‘Nevia’ playing folk-oriented music, and our drummer Bulat Sadreev played in heavy metal band ‘Acid Venom’.

Why did you pick your band name? How did you form? Why did you decide to play the genre or genres you do?

It was Alex’s idea. Bagira like ‘Bagheera’, black panther in Kipling’s Jungle Book. We originally played songs like classic heavy metal with melodic vocals parts, as I said before, but over the time Bagira’s music has progressed and has become more extreme with clean and extreme vocal elements. And we call it ‘groove metal’ now because Groove is the main idea of our current songs.

What can you tell us about your latest record?

It’s the most interesting project in my life. ‘From Russia with Groove’ is an EP consists of two songs, which has been previously released on Russian language. It’s the riff-based music with extreme vocal elements and clean vocal elements. Alex (our guitarist) was our Sound Producer for this project and because of him we could find our own sound. You may not like it, but you can’t say that it looks like another one.
As regards lyrics – we didn’t translate it, we gave a new lease of life for it. It was difficult to find the words like I can do it on Russian, but I think – we did it. And because of that you can feel my fears, my desperate and my pain in this songs.

What the kind of album feedbacks are you waiting for?

I can’t answer 🙂 It’s an experiment and I just wanna know what the foreign listeners outside our social networks think about that

Are you gonna to make some world tour in the future? Do you think this is available for everybody option to tour around the globe? What do you think band have to do to get such opportunity?
We want it and I hope we’ll do. I think that all is available if someone really wants and does everything for this. We trying to understand is our music necessary all around the world. Some of our foreign listeners are waiting for us and if there will be a lot of Bagira’s fans – it will be possible.

Do you believe in heavy music scene without money?

No, if you we not about music like hobby.

What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

There are a lot of free music stocks like Napster here, in Russia. And all of music if it interesting for someone – gets there. So we have CDs and some merch to sell on shows, have digital releases (ITunes, Spotify and etc) for our listeners. But we make the most sales for non-Russian listeners.

Who are your musical influences? Have you ever think your band could be so famous as your favorites?

Metallica, Pantera, Machine Head, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Lamb of god… Hah, yes, we’re thinking about that and there’s some motivation to know them and listen to their music

Do you have a formal music education? Do you think it’s a Kind of important thing?

On different levels. For example our guitarist Gleb has the High music education as music teacher, and Alex was in music school. I think it’s very important, cause if you haven’t it – you must doing much more for good results. It’s more difficult to learn something singly, without Guru

How do you balance your music with other obligations – mate, children, job?

At the heart of all is Bagira. Each of us understand it and building his life appropriately

How do you handle mistakes during a performance? Or you can assure there are no any mistakes during your gigs? Do you get nervous before a performance or a competition?

We are not get nervous before or during the shows, but sometimes there are mistakes. We know how to hide it. And you must definitely give some ‘WOW’ after that.
